Rare pictures show Malia and Sasha Obama touring the White House with Bush twins in 2008

The twin daughters of former President George W Bush have shared rare pictures from the time they showed Malia and Sasha Obama round the White House eight years ago.

In an open letter offering advice to President Barack Obama’s daughters this week as they join the "rarified club" of "former First Children", Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager recalled meeting the girls on the steps of the White House in November 2008.

"The pictures, shared with the Today show, show Malia and Sasha, aged 10 and seven years old respectively, meeting staff, inspecting the bedrooms, delighting in the large cushioned seats of the White House movie theatre, and sliding down the banisters.

"The four of us wandered the majestic halls of the house you had no choice but to move in to," the Bush twins wrote.

After the Bush twins read out the letter on the Today show, Ms Bush Hager, who works for the programme, said: "It’s just amazing how fast eight years go by and how they’ve become these really unbelievable women and we just wanted to make sure they knew."

She also paid tribute to Michelle Obama, whom she described as a "role model".
